Blog Isaac Albeniz!
Isaac Manuel Francisco Albeniz (May 29, 1860, Camprodon, Spain - May 19, 1909, Cambo-les-Bains, France) was a pianist and a composer, best known for his piano works that are based on Spanish folk music. Albeniz was a child prodigy who first performed at the age of four. After a short stay at the Leipzig conservatory, in 1876 went to study in Brussels. In 1880, he went to Budapest to study with Franz Liszt, only to find out that Liszt was in Weimar. In 1883 he met the teacher and composer Felipe Pedrell (1841-1921), who inspired him to write Spanish music like the Suite Espanola, Op. 47. During the 1890s Albeniz lived in London and Paris and wrote mainly theatrical works. In 1900 started to suffer from a kidney disease and returned to the writing of piano music. Between 1905 and 1909 he composed his most famous work, Iberia (1906-1909), a suite of twelve piano impressions. Albeniz died on May 19, 1909 in the French Pyrenees and lies buried on the Cementeri del Sudoest, Barcelona. About

This web page is part of a biographical database on Great Ideas. These are living ideas that have shaped, defined and directed world culture for over 2,500 years. By definition the Great Ideas are radical. As such they are sometimes misread, or distorted by popular simplifications. Understanding a Great Idea demands personal engagement. Our selection of Great Ideas is drawn from literature and philosophy, science, art, music, theatre, and cinema. We also include biographies of pivotal historical and religious figures, as well as contributions from women and other historically under-represented minorities. The result is an integrated multi-cultural and multi-disciplinary database built upon the framework of the always controversial Great Books Core List published in 1940 by the late Great Books Pioneer Mortimer Adler (1902-2001). Most of the works on that list are available in the 60 volume Great Books of the Western World.
