Studied in Alexandria, Egypt, under the followers of Euclid. His father was an astronomer named Phidias. He invented many war machines, compound pulley systems, planetarium, and possibly the water screw and water organ. In science he pioneered the fields of hydrostatics, static mechanics, and pycnometry (the measurement of the volume or density of an object). He wrote on many mathematical subjects and is generally regarded as the greatest mathematician and scientist of Antiquity.
