Biography
Blog Alain Resnais
Alain Resnais (b. 1922) was born in Vannes, France, and studied at I.D.H.E.C., the French film school. He edits his own films as well as those of other directors. His early reputation was built on his "art" films: Van Gogh (1948), Gauguin (1950), and Guernica (1950).
Resnais' film, Mon Oncle d'Amerique (1980) was awarded the 1980 Cannes Grand Prix. Last Year at Marienbad (1961) received the 1961 Venice Golden Lion. Resnais was also awarded the 1995 Golden Lion in celebration of the 100th anniversary of motion pictures.
Resnais studied at Paris's Institut des hautes etudes cinematographiques (IDHEC) and began his directing career as a documentary maker. While firmly recognised as a leading member of the New Wave, Resnais is older than most of its members (Truffaut, Godard, Chabrol, Rivette, et al) and is also associated with what Roud has characterised as the 'left-bank New Wave'. Resnais's oeuvre is usually understand to comprise an exploration of time and memory and so offers an often difficult exploration of narrative temporality.
Alain Resnais also directed the following movies: Smoking/No Smoking (1994); Mon Oncle D'Amerique (1980); Providence (1977); Stavisky (1974); La Guerre Est Finie (1966); Muriel (1963); Last Year at Marienbad (1961); Hiroshima, Mon Amour (1960). [Adapted from Chris Marker]

About
this Database:

This web page is part of a biographical database on Great Ideas. These are living ideas that have shaped, defined and directed world culture for over 2,500 years. By definition the Great Ideas are radical. As such they are sometimes misread, or distorted by popular simplifications. Understanding a Great Idea demands personal engagement. Our selection of Great Ideas is drawn from literature and philosophy, science, art, music, theatre, and cinema. We also include biographies of pivotal historical and religious figures, as well as contributions from women and other historically under-represented minorities. The result is an integrated multi-cultural and multi-disciplinary database built upon the framework of the always controversial Great Books Core List published in 1940 by the late Great Books Pioneer Mortimer Adler (1902-2001). Most of the works on that list are available in the 60 volume Great Books of the Western World.
