She was born in Baltimore, Maryland in 1929. She has received a MacArthur Fellowship, the Academy of American Poets Fellowship, a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Lannan Foundation, the Lenore Marshall Poetry Prize, and the Ruth Lilly Poetry Prize. Rich wan the 1974 National Book Award for Diving Into the Wreck.
